an approach that has been formalized in urban design literature as “shared use”. The photographs on this page illustrate the way in which paving patterns, rather than curbs, can ‘zone’ the street for shared use between pedestrians and vehicles. This approach has been adopted at Downtown Crossing, primarily for the shopping environment. The exhibit is the result of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) teaming up with the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, according to a news post on the BRA’s website. The model, which goes permanently to the Boston Society of Architects’ Atlantic Wharf space in December, is offered as a means of easing public discourse on urban.
